Wax Dipping Service – Protect Your Investment
Extend the life of your woodenware with our professional wax dipping service using HiveGuard microcrystalline wax. This time-tested method provides superior protection against weather, rot, and decay—without the ongoing maintenance of paint.
Why Wax Dipping?
- Long-lasting protection: Properly dipped equipment can last 15-20+ years
- No painting required: Skip the annual repainting and let the wax do the work
- Superior weatherproofing: Seals wood against moisture, prevents warping and rot
- Maintains breathability: Unlike paint, wax allows wood to breathe naturally while still protecting it
How It Works
This is a drop-off service at our Medina, TN location. Once you place your order, we’ll contact you to schedule your dipping appointment.
What We Accept
- New or used equipment (must be cleaned of all comb, propolis, and bee material)
- Painted or unpainted wood
- Boxes should be assembled
- Deep boxes, medium boxes, shallow boxes, bottom boards, and top covers
Used Equipment Sterilization
We accept used equipment for wax dipping at a small additional charge. Used boxes require a longer dipping time to properly sterilize and kill disease spores. The extended exposure to 302-degree wax ensures complete sterilization, giving you peace of mind that your equipment is safe to use. All used equipment must be thoroughly cleaned of comb, propolis, honey, and bee debris before drop-off.
*** If you suspect AFB or another disease, contact us before bringing anything. The tank can sterilize AFB spores, but burning the boxes is still best practice in those cases. ***
The Science Behind Wax Dipping
Hot wax dipping has been the gold standard for wooden hive preservation for generations, and the process is truly remarkable. When wood is submerged in 302 degree HiveGuard wax, something important happens: the moisture inside the wood instantly boils out and is replaced by the molten wax. This isn’t just a surface coating—the wax actually penetrates deep into the wood fibers, replacing the water that would otherwise lead to rot and decay.
This is why wax dipping is so much more effective than paint. Paint sits on top of the wood and can trap moisture underneath, eventually leading to peeling, cracking, and accelerated rot. Wax dipping works from the inside out. By displacing the moisture within the wood itself, the wax creates a waterproof barrier throughout the entire structure of the wood, not just on the surface.
HiveGuard microcrystalline wax is specifically formulated for beekeeping equipment. It has a higher melting point than standard paraffin, ensuring it won’t soften or run in summer heat. Once the wood cools, the wax solidifies within the wood fibers, creating a tough, flexible protection that moves with the wood through seasonal expansion and contraction. This prevents the cracking and splitting common with rigid surface finishes.
Benefits You’ll Notice
- Weather resistant: Rain, snow, and humidity can’t penetrate wax-saturated wood
- Prevents rot from within: By replacing moisture in the wood, wax stops decay before it starts
- Pest deterrent: The wax-saturated wood is less appealing to pests and harder to burrow into
- Easy to clean: The wax creates a smooth surface that doesn’t collect dirt and debris
- Natural appearance: Maintains the beautiful grain and character of the wood with a rich, honey-toned finish
- One-time treatment: Unlike paint that requires reapplication every few years, wax dipping is typically a one-time treatment for the life of the equipment
Best Practices
For optimal results, we recommend dipping new or used wood (bare wood allows for better wax penetration than painted surfaces). While we accept painted boxes, the wax will penetrate better into bare wood where it can fully replace the moisture content. All equipment must be free of comb, propolis, honey, and bee debris before dipping.
Invest in protection that lasts. Your bees deserve equipment built to endure.
Pricing
Pricing ranges from $5.00 – $9.00 depending on equipment type and whether it’s new or used.
